Fight continues against councils selling memorials

28 January 2014
NAMM fights on.

The National Association of Memorial Masons (NAMM) is continuing its fight against North East Lincolnshire Council’s decision to sell memorials directly to the public as a ‘service’. NAMM has consulted a barrister and the response has been circulated to other associations that are also concerned about what else councils might start selling.

Phil Potts, the National Executive Officer of NAMM, is hoping to formulate a plan of action with other associations to tackle the council, which is buying a range of about 20 lawn memorials from NAMM Company Associate Member Granart Memorials in Chapel en le Frith, Derbyshire.

In the latest NAMM Newsletter, Phil Potts writes (and emphasises it in red ink): “This is probably the most important issue to confront our industry in recent history and we urgently need to present a united front to strengthen our position and effectively challenge Local Authority Trading.”
