Structural steel company fined for failing to maintain cranes

A London structural steel fabricator has been fined for failing to maintain its cranes in spite of notices from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE).

Westminster Magistrates' Court heard how William Fry Fabrications Ltd failed to examine thoroughly two cranes it used, despite receiving both Improvement and Prohibition Notices in 2011.

An investigation by HSE found that between 2012 and 2015 the cranes had not been thoroughly examined at least every 12 months in spite of an absolute legal duty on the company to do so.

William Fry Fabrications Ltd, of Neasden Lane, London, pleaded guilty to breaching Regulation 9(3)(a) of the Lifting Operations & Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998. It was fined £13,333 and ordered to pay full costs of £2,527.
