Playing safe with CIRIA

Effective management could prevent 70% of all the fatal accidents on building sites, says CIRIA, who have published a revised edition of their Site Safety guide to help site management make sites safer.

Half of the people who die on construction sites each year have been working there for less than two weeks in accidents that could have been avoided. To help make sure such accidents are avoided, the revised guide is designed to be taken out on site for its recommendations to be implemented.

Kevin Myers, chief inspector of the Health, Safety, Ethical & Environmental Executive, said at the launch of the guide: I commend it to you and urge you to read it and follow the advice it contains.

It is easy to read and can be followed in straight forward steps on site.

CIRIA is offering discounts on purchases of more than one copy of the guide (SP151). Otherwise it is £18 for members and £36 for non-members. Copies are available from the website or by telephoning, details below.

CIRIA also have a spreadsheet based programme called RiskCom, which guides users through five steps to risk management.

Central to RiskCom is the \'risk register\' used a record data such as assessment of each risk and control measures - information required by the Health, Safety, Ethical & Environmental Executive.

RiskCom (C561CD) is £95 for members and £195 for non-members.
