Red St Bees goes to Canada

Cumbria Stone Quarries, part of the Stancliffe Group in Matlock, Derbyshire, bought by Marshalls last year, have been supplying Red St Bees sandstone to the new Toronto Transit Authority headquarters in Ontario, Canada.

The building combines traditional north American brickwork with British Red St Bees features around the top of the building to complement the Art Deco-inspired design.

The new building for the Transit Authority, who run the busses and trains in Toronto, uses £50,000 worth of the stone supplied as slab and finished product.

And this is only the latest contract in north America won by the Stancliffe Group. Other notable projects have included the Toronto State Legislature (from which the Transit Authority contract developed), Bernheim Building in Kentucky and a Locharbriggs arch for Montreal.

There is a tradition of building in British stone in Ontario because ships used the stone as ballast on their way from the UK to north America and then left it there when they collected cargoes for the return trip.
