Highlights: Aliva UK

The new Woolwich Civic office designed by HLM Architects is the central hub of the London Borough of Greenwich’s service delivery model. It is designed to work in unison with local centres in the adjoining wards. Aliva were responsible for the stone facade, working alongside installers Putney & Wood.

The building features a block profile surrounded by glass and exposing negative corners as well as some complex geometry. A 40mm Jura limestone panel was used for the front elevation and 30mm for the soffit areas. The Aliva technical team produced the detailed designs and interface details along with the structural calculations.

The Ali Stone 2 support system used for the vertical elevations is an aluminium alloy system comprised of vertical beams and profiles to which horizontal beams are attached for holding the natural stone panels. A kerf is made in the top and bottom of the stone panel to allow the stainless steel retention pins to be located via plastic slots.

Ali Stone 3, used for the soffit areas, is an aluminium alloy system of brackets, box section vertical profiles and horizontal beams, upon which the Jura limestone tiles were fastened by hidden anchors to the back of each stone panel.

The Aliva design services and systems offer clients the option to maintain the traditional characteristics of natural stone while utilising tried and tested methods that ensure maximum speed of installation and control costs.
