Clarification from Natural Stone Directory

In the Natural Stone Directory a picture appears labelled as Griffeton Wood Stone. It should have been identified as Hopton Wood stone. Adrian Lowe, of Francis N Lowe Ltd, Matlock, Derbyshire, would like to put the record straight.

In 1994, Longcliffe Quarries Ltd and Francis N Lowe Ltd formed a joint company to rekindle the famous Hopton Wood Derbyshire limestone.

Because the title to the name Hopton Wood was held by Tarmac (who no longer produced the architectural stone) a new name of Griffeton Wood was registered, although the stone was quarried from the Hopton Wood measures in Brassington Moor Quarry.

In 1998 Hopton Wood Stone Firms Ltd was acquired by Lowes and Longcliffe together with the title to all trade marks for Hopton Wood. The name of Greffeton Wood was, therefore, allowed to fall dormant (although it is still a registered name) with the famous Hopton Wood title being promoted.

The name is exclusive to Hopton Wood Stone Firms Ltd with Longcliffe Quarry as sole operator and Francis N Lowe Ltd (Hopton Wood Stone Sales) as sole supplier of genuine Hopton Wood limestone for both architectural and monumental applications.
