DSW present certificate for dry stone sculpture

The Dry Stone Walling Association has awarded a Certificate of Merit in the landscaping category of its acclaimed Pinnacle Award Scheme for an unusual dry stone sculpture built at Clent, Worcestershire.

The award-winning project, designed by Mike Fletcher, is called Sunmoves - Calm Earth Sculpture. It is a rising spiral of dry stone walling enclosing a space with built in seating that has camomile growing on it to add to the calmness of the space.

The setting for the sculpture is Sunfield, a residential education and care facility for peopel with severe and complex learning difficulties. Mike Fletcher is the lead artist at Sunfield. Anthony Garness, a professional dry stone waller from the Cotswolds, helped him to build the sculpture. This piece is the largest of a series of outdoor works at Sunfield tghat provide creative ways to help the people there develop communication skills.

The Pinnacle Award Scheme was introduced the DSWA to recognise dry stone walling of outstanding quality or merit in terms of craftsmanship and design. The Awards are presented on an ad hoc basis as appropriate work is produced.

This award was presented to Prof Barry Carpenter, the chief executive and principal at Sunfield, Mike Fletcher and Anthony Garness in July during the Sunfield carnival.
