Net zero carbon emissions in 2050 will not be achieved without companies taking part. And to encourage you to get involved the government has launched a competition called Hero of Net Zero. Deadline for entries is midnight on 6 October.

It is part of the UK Government’s 'Together for our Planet' campaign and aims to celebrate and reward those small businesses taking the most innovative action to go green and cut their greenhouse gas emissions so they achieve net zero carbon (or equivalent) emissions by 2050.

If you are on that journey and will share your experiences, describing the actions your business is taking, you could be at the COP26 climate conference in Glasgow receiving a prize worth £4,500 to help you develop and grow your business.

The entries will be judged by a panel that includes the government’s net zero champion, MP Andrew Griffiths. The top five shortlisted companies in each category will be invited to a special Hero for Net Zero event at COP26 in Glasgow on 2 November.

Who can take part?

You must be a small business (50 or fewer employees) based in the United Kingdom.

There are two categories:

  • Micro – 1-9 employees
  • Small – 10-50 employees

To enter you must have made a public commitment to become a Net Zero business by 2050, which you can do on the government business climate hub at https://businessclimatehub.org/uk

Once you have done that, simply fill out the competition form, which you can access from https://businessclimatehub.org/heroes-of-net-zero-competition, and upload a photo that best showcases the actions you are taking to go green.

The entries judged the best will be invited to attend the COP26 international climate change summit in Glasgow on 2 November, where the winners will be announced and receive a prize package worth £4,500. It includes:

  • 21 hours consultancy with an Energy Manager and one-year free access to the Business Energy Intelligence energy management platform, worth £3,500, from SSE (https://www.sse.com/)
  • Six hours of bespoke mentoring with a NatWest Enterprise Manager from the bank’s Climate Accelerator programme, helping winning businesses gain climate friendly skills in accessing new markets to attracting talent, and
  • Up to £1,000 in vouchers to access a brand-new digital advertising support package from BT to grow your business.
