"Memorials by Artists for young people, children and babies"

Harriet Frazer formed Memorials by Artists in 1988 after her step-daughter, Sophie, died and Harriet could not find the artistic memorial she wanted from the traditional memorial masonry trade.

What she did find was a number of artist letterers who could produce individual and inspirational memorials mostly, but not exclusively, in stone. She brought those artists together under the banner of Memorials by Artists and has promoted them under that name ever since.

Now she and Hilary Meynell, who runs Memorials by Artists with Harriet, have produced a little book called Memorials by Artists for young people, children and babies, with some practical and some inspirational advice about commissioning memorials to youngsters.

"We have talked about bringing this book to fruition for many years," say Harriett and Hilary in their introduction. "At last it is here and we hope it will help bereaved parents, and perhaps other members of the family too, in the realising of a memorial."

There is advice on working within the rules of cemeteries and graveyards, involving brothers and sisters in the design and wording of a memorial, and working with the artist to achieve a unique and distinctive memorial.

There are more than 70 colour photographs reproduced in the book, mostly of stone, often slate, memorials that include headstones, tablets, pebbles, stone seats and bird baths.

There are also some letters from the bereaved included, talking about their experiences of commissioning memorials to their children.

In just 80 pages Memorials by Artists have created a little book that will be a comfort to those who have lost a child, as well as an inspiration and a practical help.
