Bath & Portland Stone is one of the oldest suppliers of natural limestone and masonry products in the UK. The unique limestones of Bath and Portland have been associated with some the greatest architectural achievements in the world, from St Paul’s Cathedral and National Gallery in London to the Georgian splendour of the City of Bath itself.
Bath & Portland Stone are now proud to announce that the world famous Box Ground Bath Stone is once again available for the first time in 60 years. As the most durable and widely used of Bath Stones, the Box Ground stone is now commercially available from our new quarrying development in Wiltshire. The new quarry is recognised as the single source of Box Ground stone in UK.
Extensively used during the 18th and 19th centuries, the Box Ground stone is the same type of Bath Stone used by the famous architects John Wood the elder and John Wood the younger to build the magnificent Georgian City of Bath, which is now a world heritage site.
This historical achievement in reintroducing one of the most evocative building stones of the British Isles has presented itself as an opportunity to continue creating and maintaining our built heritage, which spans more than 1,000 years use of Box Ground stone.
