Indigenous stone : Block Stone have the answers

Scotch Buff, a medium grained sandstone quarried near Melsonby in North Yorkshire, was used by Realstone in the retail and residential development pictured right at Glasgow Cross. At Hereford Cathedral the medium grained Dukes gritstone with its veined bed markings was used by Capps & Capps for this restoration work. Dukes stone is quarried near Whatstandwell in Matlock, Derbyshire.

These are just two of the stones quarried by Block Stones from their 10 quarries. Some of the quarries have distinctive beds within them, such as the three beds from Ancaster – Weatherbed, which takes a good polish and is ideal for flooring; Hard White, used in cathedrals and other prestigious buildings including St Pancras railway station; Basebed, a lesser known stone similar to Clipsham.

Block Stone and their associated processing company, Realstone, are among the UK’s largest and best known dimensional stone suppliers.
