Indigenous stone : Indisputedly green in Dorset

The house (pictured right) is called The Walled Garden. It is in Shaftesbury, Dorset, and was built using the local Shaftesbury Greenstone from Melbury Stone.

The house was designed by architect Philip Proctor, of the practice Proctor Associates, who are based in Shaftesbury, for his own accommodation.

There were 180m3 of sawn and scabbled ashlar used in the construction, as well as sawn heads and cills, all manufactured by Melbury Stone, who were the specialist stone contractors for the project. The main contractors were another local firm, Sheen & Hare.

The Greenstone parrots (pictured inset) on the top of the gate piers were carved by one of Melbury Stone’s own masons.

The project scores highly in sustainability terms, with the stone travelling no more than three miles from the quarry to the site via the processing yard .
